Ryan Reynolds: «La fama distrugge l'amore»

Soprattutto se ti senti sempre spiato, come ci ha raccontato a Londra l'attore canadese ex marito di Scarlett Johansson. «Ogni cosa che fai finisce su Twitter»

«So bene cosa significa sentirsi spiati, guardati. Quando vai al ristorante o in un locale a bere qualcosa, c’è sempre qualcuno pronto a scrivere su Twitter quello che stai facendo. Devi stare attento a ogni cosa che fai, perché il giorno dopo la leggerai di sicuro da qualche parte».

Avere una vita privata non è sempre facile. Soprattutto se ti chiami Ryan Reynolds, sei l'uomo più sexy del pianeta (parola di People), hai come ex moglie Scarlett Johansson, e la tua nuova fiamma è la star di Gossip Girl Blake Lively (ex di Leonardo DiCaprio).
Anche in Safe House (in Italia dal 2 marzo) Reynolds, canadese di 35 anni, deve sacrificare l’amore per la carriera. Nel film, è una recluta della Cia a cui viene affidato un pericoloso criminale (Denzel Washington).

«Ho parlato con molti agenti, volevo capire come funziona il loro lavoro», spiega.

«Mi hanno raccontato che cosa vuol dire mentire alla tua famiglia e a chi ami. Ho capito che non mi interessava fare l’agente alla James Bond: volevo mostrare la realtà di queste persone e quanto sono sole».

Lei, però, non rinuncia all’amore. Vorrebbe diventare padre?
«Sì, voglio assolutamente dei figli in futuro. Ma non so quando succederà».

A Hollywood ci sono molti canadesi di successo, Ryan Gosling, Jim Carrey, David Cronenberg. Qual è il vostro segreto?
«Siamo parassiti! Credo che sia perché cresciamo sentendoci i fratelli minori degli americani, li guardiamo da lontano. Poi ce la fai e arrivi a Los Angeles, ma non hai mai la sensazione di farne parte veramente. Questo può essere un vantaggio, ti aiuta a non prenderti troppo sul serio».

Si fida delle persone?
«Mi ci vuole un po’ per lasciarmi andare. La fiducia va conquistata. Chi fa davvero parte della mia vita è lì già da tanto tempo. Ho bisogno di 4 o 5 anni prima di riuscire a dire: “Ok, ci tengo, e so che per te è lo stesso„. Credo che sia importante riconoscere gli amici, ma ancora di più i nemici».

Chi sono i nemici?
«In realtà, credo di essere io il peggior nemico di me stesso. Perdo sempre troppo tempo ad ascoltare la mia testa, invece dei miei sentimenti. Dovrei reagire più d’istinto».

Quand’è stata l’ultima volta che si è arrabbiato con qualcuno?
«È da anni che non mi capita, cerco di controllarmi. Preferisco prima parlare. Piuttosto, esplodo dopo, quando sono solo. In passato ho fatto delle brutte litigate e alla fine mi sono sentito solo peggio. Di solito mi arrabbio con me stesso, soprattutto sul set, quando non riesco a fare una scena come vorrei. Ecco, lì perdo la pazienza».

Tempo dieci minuti, un giornalista francese viene sbattuto fuori dall’intervista. Mi racconta che ha provato a fare una domanda su Scarlett. La prova che Ryan Reynolds, ogni tanto, esplode anche davanti agli altri.

ET met up with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds to talk about their new movie Safe House, and got the scoop about an on-set injury, how Ryan feels about Denzel, and what Denzel thinks about playing the "bad guy."Actress and comedian Aisha Tyler interviewed Denzel and Ryan for ET, and when she asked about how many of the stunts they performed, Denzel brought up how Ryan gave him his first black eye in his life during a stunt for the film."I'm in handcuffs and I'm supposed to reach over to try to choke him," Denzel recounted. "It just so happens [that] I reach over as his head was whipping back."Although Ryan gave Denzel a shiner, it certainly wasn't on purpose, as he had some kind words to say about his legendary co-star."He's the best actor in the world," Ryan said. "I'm not kidding about that…The problem is that you get caught watching [him act] sometimes."When Denzel, who has played his share of "bad guy" roles, was asked whether he preferred to play the "bad guy" or the "good guy," he said he doesn't really think of his roles in those terms; however, he revealed that it is more fun to play the role of the villain."It's cliché to say, but bad guys have more fun," Denzel assessed. "You can get away with more…In playing a real character who's heroic, you're kind of stuck. There's only so much you can get away with. But [the] bad guy can say anything."

Ryan Reynolds is the perfect guy as Matt Weston in Safehouse, producer Scott Stuber recalls: “We had to be certain that the actor opposite Denzel would be ready. I’ve known Ryan for a long time and was sure that he would step up to that challenge. More importantly, he wanted such a challenge.”

Reynolds explains his interest in joining the team: “First and foremost, I was riveted by the story. It was also an opportunity to work with Daniel, who is an unusual and unpredictable filmmaker. He is unlike anyone I’ve ever worked with, or even met before. He’s this incredibly wise, intuitive, intellectual thug. It’s a weird combination that gives him this incredible street sense. He’s a guy who could easily be in a bar fight, and at the same time, if you name any book, there’s a good chance he’s read it—among the plusses, not the least of which was working with Denzel. You know you will learn a lot working with Denzel: Spending time with him makes you a better actor.”

The actor found the duality of Weston’s life—the housekeeper’s cover is that he is a health worker—compelling. He says, “I was fascinated by the fact that my character lives a complete lie. He’s lying to himself and wraps himself up in the flag. There’s a lot of hubris involved. He feels what he’s doing is righteous, and yet, there’s a dark, seedy underbelly to what he does—not the least of which is the fact that he lies to everyone he loves, and that takes its toll. He’s beaten up from this.”

Reynolds explains his character’s transformation: “Matt’s growth is debatable. In some ways, it’s almost a regression. Throughout the course of the film, he’s resorting to some of the same ways he’s previously despised. The audience’s concern as we’re watching is that Matt might be affected by Frost in the same way that Frost was swayed by whoever it was who caused him to go off book. One of the things that Frost does is reveal to Matt what this agency really is, how some of the black ops that it engages in are in the guise of a higher good. It affects Matt deeply, and he’s seeing how this could easily become him one day. Whether that’s growth or not, he’s definitely changed.”

Washington saw that growth in the man playing Weston and found Reynolds a worthy on-screen adversary. The performer compliments: “Ryan is a very good actor who works very hard, and we had good chemistry. He has an inherent innocence that I think was right for the part.”

How did you come to this film?

I read the script and loved it. Then I met with Daniel Espinosa. I had seen SNABBA CASH, which he directed, and I thought it was incredibly inventive. It was a really interesting take on the action/crime thriller and I thought Daniel would be a great match for this project. I usually gravitate first towards a character and then towards the overall story. I liked that there is this hubris associated with these guys who enter agencies like the CIA thinking that it’s some romantic journey into a love of God and country. Then once they are involved, it is actually incredibly disillusioning.

What’s your character’s relationship to Denzel’s character?

Frost (Denzel’s character) represents everything my character, Matt Weston, despises. He’s betrayed his country and his own personal code of ethics in innumerable ways. Although my character opposes everything Frost stands for, by the end of the film we’re left wondering if Matt is going that same route.

Have you had a lot of action scenes?

The fights in this movie are really long and extensive. They’re not kung fu or the typical fight scenes that you see in this sort of film. These fights are just ugly. There’s biting and head-butting. The driving is pretty intense, as well.

How have you found working with director Daniel Espinosa?

Daniel is amazing. He embodies the aspects of a great psycho-analyst that all good directors have and he is very good with actors. He sees everything. Nothing gets by him.

When the safe house to which he’s remanded is attacked by brutal mercenaries, a rookie (Reynolds) is forced to help him escape. As the masterful manipulator toys with his reluctant protégé, the young operative finds his morality tested and idealism shaken. Now, they must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, ’Safe House’ co-stars Nora Arnezeder, Vera Farmiga, Ruben Blades, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Cunningham, Tim McGraw, Robert Patrick, and Sam Shepard. The film is due to hit cinemas February 10th in the US, and Febuary 24th in the UK. Your character is very much an ideologue to begin with, that slowly breaks down over the course of the film….

Ryan Reynolds: Oh yeah. I feel like that line can blur between jingoism and idealism, a little bit. I think we start out, my character, as a God and country guy, he’s a patriot, he has that kind of mentality. But then layers of that are slowly pealed away, he has to deal with a lot of disillusionment. He sees that this job he signed up for is incredibly murderous and corrupt in a lot of ways. And then he’s seeing this sort of weird perverting mirror image of himself in this guy who’s much older and who’s been doing it a lot longer. I know for a fact, spending time with these guys that have been in the CIA for 30 or so years, that when you talk to them they started out with a real, ultra patriotic, idealism that really gets replaced by a kind of cynicism later. But part of that is because they’ve spent their entire life as a lie. They have to lie to their wife and children, for 20 or 30 years….I spoke to one guy who just revealed to his wife and children what he does for a living after 25 years, 25 years! That is amazing, I just asked, “What was the reaction like?” I was fascinated, and he replied, “Not good,” (laughs). It’s tough, because when you go to bed….all those details, it makes her wonder, “What was true? What was wasn’t?”

Denzel Washington is so good at playing charming yet at the same time fierce. How was it working with him?

Ryan Reynolds: It was fascinating. He’s just a really interesting guy to work with, so good at what he does. It was wild to see someone who’s been doing this so well for so long. He’s just a real classy and disciplined actor, and I think that’s what makes him….the success is irrelevant to him, what makes him such a good actor is that he really cares about what he does and he’s passionate. As a younger actor I look at that and it really hits me, that’s amazing, you can go this long in this industry and be that prolific, be that passionate.

How was it preparing for the physical fights? In this film there‘s something very primal about it, in particular the final fight sequence you’re involved in.

Ryan Reynolds: It was a lot of choreography, you don’t have to choreograph pretty fights as much. It’s the ugly, messy, knife fights in a phone booth that you really need to work on. Because they’re the ones people can get hurt. It was a couple months of choreography, especially that last fight sequence I’m in – that was shot over two days. We spanned every room in the house with that fight. We’re falling out of windows….it felt very old fashioned in a way. There was no real trickery. By the end of it we were covered in scrapes cuts and bruises. We were happy when it was over, definitely (laughs). There’s nothing polished about it. When we are in these intense fight sequences, you’re seeing veins popping out of peoples necks, it’s ugly and nasty. It’s kill or be killed? There is definitely something raw, primal, and deeply screwed up about it. I think it’s much more interesting to watch a guy who’s forced to fight when he doesn’t want to, than it is to watch someone who’s very well versed in those sort of activities.

I think this is one of those film that you’ll really have an opportunity to see a variety of different things. I mean, I think it appeals to people who are pure adrenaline/action junkies, then at the same time it’s a character piece. As actors, I don’t think there’s many of us who are particularly attracted to shooting a movie that is purely an action film because they’re hard (laughs), you get your ass kicked. I remember 10 years ago, falling on cement was hilarious, now? It hurts (laughs). When you get those two components right, when you have an action film that is also deeply rooted in character, you get something really rewarding from it, from both sides.

What was it like working with Daniel Espinosa? His sort of kinetic approach to film-making.

Ryan Reynolds: If you spend time with Daniel you kinda see where he’s coming from. He’s unlike anyone I’ve ever worked with or met before. He’s like this incredibly wise, intellectual, intuitive, thug….which is sort of a weird combination for a person (laughs). It gives him this incredible street sense and feeling that he’s a guy who can very easily be in a bar fight, but at the same time you could name any book and there’s a good chance that he’s read it before you. He was awesome.

Ryan Reynolds dice che girare 'Safe House' lo ha reso "un relitto".L'attore canadese interpreta l'agente della CIA Matt Weston nel prossimo thriller di azione ed è stato molto coinvolto nei suoi stunt per il suo personaggio, nonostante i boss del film avessero assunto uno stuntman per le sue scene più fisiche.

Ha detto: "Ho lottato con questo ragazzo per cinque ore e finiremo più tardi.
"I combattimenti in questo film sono veramente lunghi e intensi e sono sgradevoli e ci sono morsi e sbattimenti di teste. Kung fu Canadese, lo chiamiamo noi.
"Continuo a vedere uno stuntman vestito come me, ma non sembrano volerlo inserire. Sono un relitto, ma poi dico: 'Sono io che devo farmi prendere il culo a calci da un mercenario di 140 kg'."
Il co-protagonista di Ryan, Denzel Washington, è stato anche lui coinvolto in alcune scene d'azione estenuanti e mentre lui ha trovato alcune delle acrobazie difficili, insiste che non sono state troppo spaventose.
Ha detto alla rivista Empire: "Non abbiamo girato una scena con almeno una pagina di dialogo in un mese, ci sono un sacco di corse e salti in questo film, e ho un male al ginocchio e ho pure subito il waterboarding
"Avere qualcuno che ti versa l'acqua giù per il naso quando sei a testa in giù è un po 'difficile, anche se penso che i ragazzi che me l'hanno fatto erano più spaventati di me".

La coppia appare insieme nel nuovo thriller d'azione 'Safe House' e, mentre la stella canadese - che interpreta l'agente della CIA Matt Weston e la sua co-star il sociopatico collega Tobin Frost - non usa il 'metodo' di recitare favorito da Denzel, ha comunque trovato l'approccio del suo nuovo amico per il lavoro accattivante.
Ha detto alla rivista Empire: "Lui vive, mangia, respira e dorme il suo personaggio. Devo sempre chiamarlo Frost e lui mi chiama Matt. E' adorabile...."
